Annual Meeting 2024 in Osnabrück

Under the early autumn sun researchers of the priority program came together in Osnabrück on September 17th and 18th for the second annual meeting of the Schwerpunktprogramm (SPP). On the morning of September 17th Olaf Spinczyk welcomed the researchers at our conference site in Osnabrück’s historical Prince-Bishop’s Palace – today seat of the University of Osnabrück. Afterwards the meeting kicked off with a keynote presentation by Ada Gavrilovska (Georgia Institute of Technology) about “Systems Software Challenges for Processing with Intelligent Storage and Memories”.

The keynote was followed by the first session, chaired by Stefan Wildermann (FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg). The projects Anchor, HetCIM and SMAUG presented their research progress and further planning. Subsequently members of the project MemoryDiplomat reported about the mini workshop “Data Structures for Disruptive Memories” that took place in Dortmund in February 2024. After lunch Valentina Damerow (DFG) gave a short presentation lining out the upcoming second phase of the priority program.

Jens Teubner (TU Dortmund) chaired the next presentation session featuring the projects ARTS-NVM, Memento and SMASH reporting on their research progress. SMASH team member David Broneske also gave a short overview about the results of the “Benchmark Survey” mini workshop.

In the afternoon we went into a poster session featuring posters from all projects involved and seeing lively discussions. The last session of the day was chaired by Kai-Uwe Sattler (TU Ilmenau) and included the projects NEON, HYPNOS and ParPerOS. The first day of the meeting was concluded by a keynote held by advisory board member Tobias Webel (IBM) giving an “Overview of IBM Z Mainframe, its Memory Subsystem and RAS (Reliability, Availability, Serviceability) Architecture”.

In the evening we came together at Restaurant Weinkrüger for a conference dinner and to continue the many discussions in a less formal way.

The second day of the meeting started with a further session chaired by Andreas Polze (Hasso-Plattner-Institut/University of Potsdam) and including presentations by MemoryDiplomat, PAVE and VAMPIR projects. After a coffee break we resumed the presentations. Chaired by Jeronimo Castrillon (TU Dresden) FOSSIL, CIMware, PIMPMe, as well as the coordination project reported about their work and further planning.

The last item on the meeting’s agenda was an open discussion and outlook as well as a feedback by the program’s advisory board. We were very happy that Hans Boehm (Google) from California joined us via videocall to give us some feedback and a few comments. Eventually Olaf Spinczyk thanked everyone involved and closed this years annual meeting.
