Dagstuhl Seminar on trustworthy custom silicon

From January 18th to 21st, 2026, researchers from computer architecture, operating systems, and security came together at Schloss Dagstuhl for the seminar “Trustworthy System Architectures for the Age of Custom Silicon”.

The seminar addressed the opportunities and security challenges arising from increasingly specialized processors and accelerators. Through invited talks, breakout sessions, and focused discussions, participants explored secure hardware-software co-design, trustworthy hardware architectures, and closer alignment between hardware and system software.

These topics are closely connected to the research of SPP 2377. Disruptive memory technologies—including heterogeneous, non-volatile, CXL-attached, and near-memory systems—require coordinated changes across hardware and software. Both the priority program and the Dagstuhl seminar therefore investigate how emerging hardware technologies can be integrated into future system architectures while ensuring performance, correctness, reliability, and security.

The three-day seminar was organized by Jonathan Balkind (University of California, Santa Barbara), Shweta Shinde (ETH Zürich), Jo Van Bulck (KU Leuven), and Michael Roitzsch (Barkhausen Institut). Michael Roitzsch is also principal investigator of ccFOSSIL.
